ANAN Advances Accounting Excellence at the 29th Annual Conference in Abuja

ANAN, in June 2024 signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the African Professionalisation Initiative (API), an alliance that will drive the professionalisation of public sector accountants in Nigeria. This partnership is set to strengthen the ethical foundations of Nigeria’s public sector, fostering an increased number of highly skilled, ethical professionals who will uphold good financial governance. The MOU marks a shared vision between API and ANAN to build a robust public sector, capable of supporting sustainable development through accountability and transparency. The API CEO addressed the delegates bout the benefits of the MOU for Nigeria and Africa.
The seminar’s opening ceremony was graced by His Excellency, the President of Nigeria, who was represented by Hon. Dr. Mrs. Oluwatoyin Sakirat Madein – FCNA, the Accountant General of Nigeria. In her keynote address, she urged Nigerian finance professionals to uphold the highest ethical standards, emphasizing that integrity and compliance with financial laws are the bedrock of sound financial management. Dr. Madein also commended ANAN for its leadership and for spearheading initiatives that continue to shape the evolution of accountancy in Nigeria and beyond.
ANAN President, Hon. Dr. James Ekerare Neminebor – FCNA called on delegates to embrace a forward-thinking approach to their profession. He urged accountants to integrate environmental sustainability into their financial practices, recognizing the power of their decisions to impact the planet positively. The ANAN President also emphasized the need for professionals to harness the potential of technology to increase efficiency, productivity, and value creation in the evolving financial landscape.
The ANAN CEO, Dr Fasua Kayode – FCNA urged ANAN members and nonmembers present and those attending virtually to support the development of the accountancy professions to realize value creation. He outlined in detail the benefits available at ANAN for its members and Fellows.
The event drew an impressive international delegation, with participants from Senegal, Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, and other nations. Their presence highlighted the growing importance of regional cooperation in building a sustainable future for accountancy in Africa. ANAN’s leadership expressed its deep gratitude to these distinguished guests, underscoring that collaboration across borders is vital for achieving shared goals in governance, economic development, and professional excellence.
The seminar also featured a vibrant gala dinner on September 18, offering a magnificent celebration of Nigerian culture. Delegates were treated to a feast of traditional music, unique regional cuisines, and colorful displays of the country’s iconic dress styles. The gala offered not just a taste of Nigeria but a celebration of unity and diversity, as attendees danced to the captivating rhythms of Africa’s rich musical heritage.
The grand finale of the seminar was the Fellowship Award ceremony held on September 19. This prestigious occasion saw the induction of new Fellows into the association, awarding them the esteemed title of Fellow of Certified National Accountants (FCNA). With this honor comes the responsibility of upholding the highest standards of professionalism, as well as privileges that reflect their commitment to advancing the profession.
ANAN’s investment in infrastructural and institutional frameworks, such as the Accountancy Village, which houses the Nigerian College of Accountancy and ANAN University, stood as a testament to the association’s dedication to the development of the accountancy profession. These resources, serving as the pillars of ANAN’s long-term sustainability, are designed to produce world-class accountants capable of leading in an era where public value creation and transparency are paramount.
As ANAN continues to steer the course of professionalisation, capacity-building, and regulatory advancement, its impact on Nigeria’s financial governance and accountability landscape is profound. With initiatives like this annual seminar, the association is ensuring that Nigeria’s accountants are not only equipped to meet today’s challenges but are also shaping the future of the profession in Africa. Through its leadership, ANAN reaffirms its commitment to driving progress, integrity, and ethical financial governance for the benefit of all.
