AFROSAI-E Technical Conference 2025 Reshapes The Future of Auditing
The 2025 AFROSAI-E Technical Conference, held from 7–9 October 2025 in Pretoria, South Africa, brought together top minds from across Africa to shape the future of public auditing. With the theme “Audit Quality in a Changing World,” the three-day event blended innovation, ethics, and collaboration to prepare Supreme Audit Institutions (SAIs) for the digital age.
From the start, energy filled the room as AFROSAI-E CEO Meisie Nkau opened the conference with a strong message: the future of public sector auditing belongs to those who can adapt fast and lead with integrity. The keynote address by Prof. Tankiso Moloi of the University of Johannesburg set the tone exploring how AI and digitalisation are rewriting the rules of accountability and transparency.
Innovation Meets Integrity
Throughout the sessions, delegates explored the new frontier of auditing — from integrating ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) principles to applying ISSAI 140 for audit quality. Breakaway “TeaTalks” inspired participants to think beyond checklists and focus on future readiness, ethical leadership, and human-centered auditing.
Experts such as Andrew Kellei, Nonhlanhla Ndaba, and Nikeziwe Khanyile from the AFROSAI-E Secretariat led discussions on how performance audits can create real social impact, while Ms. Portia Mkhabela from ACCA highlighted how auditors can close the digital skills gap to stay future-ready.
Day Two deepened the conversation on closing the skills gap and the power of integrity in auditing. Dr. Lincoln Cave from The Ethics Institute reminded everyone that no technology can replace human honesty – a message that resonated strongly across the room.
The Future SAI Ecosystem: Building Resilient Institutions

A standout moment came on 8 October 2025, during the session “The Future SAI Ecosystem: Building Resilient Institutions through People and Performance.” This high-impact dialogue featured Evans Mulera, CEO of the African Professionalisation Initiative (API), alongside Wilna Degenaar, Joseph Mumbire, and Gorden Kandoro from the AFROSAI-E Secretariat.
Together, they explored how professionalisation, continuous learning, and people-driven transformation can strengthen Supreme Audit Institutions (SAIs) and make them resilient in an ever-changing world. The message was clear: technology can transform systems, but people transform institutions.
Closing the Skills Gap and Honouring Excellence
The conference concluded with awards celebrating outstanding SAIs across Africa:
- SAI Tanzania — for Excellence in Implementing AFROSAI-E Environmental Audit Guidance and Initiatives, setting a high standard for environmental accountability.
- SAI Uganda — for Outstanding Achievement in Public Sector Auditing, showcasing innovation, dedication, and national impact.
A Future-Ready Audit Community
In her closing remarks, Meisie Nkau reaffirmed AFROSAI-E’s commitment to building future-ready, ethical, and digitally empowered SAIs. New initiatives such as the AFROSAI-E Model Public Audit Act and a new Financial and Compliance Audit e-learning platform were unveiled, signaling a major leap forward for capacity development in the region.
The 2025 Technical Conference was more than an event — it was a movement. A movement proving that Africa’s auditors are ready for the future — driven by ethics, powered by technology, and united by purpose.
What’s Next
Building on this momentum, API announced its next major event – the API PFM Visionary Summit, to be held 23–27 March 2026 in Johannesburg, South Africa. The Hybrid (in-person – USD 650 and Virtual – USD 199) summit will go deeper into AI in PFM, ethical governance, sustainability, and professionalisation, providing hands-on learning and networking opportunities for the continent’s finance leaders.
About The API

Our Vision: An African public sector sustainably capacitated with competent, ethical and influential professionals who support accountability, transparency and good financial governance. Our Mission: Grow the capacity of public sector finance management professionals in the African public sector through high quality, relevant and future fit learning programmes.
The API Partner Organisations
The African Professionalisation Initiative is a partnership between the accountancy profession (represented by the Pan African Federation of Accountants (“PAFA”)), Accountants General or their equivalent (African Association of Accountants General – “AAAG”)), and supreme audit institutions or courts of auditors (represented by the English (“AFROSAI-E”) and French (“CREFIAF”) language sub-groups of the African Organisation of Supreme Audit Institutions (“AFROSAI”)).
